Kwari rides luck in African bush

(BEIJING, August 19) -- Stray lions and herds of elephants - Antipass Kwari of Zimbabwe has to contend with some unusual distractions as he trains outside his country's capital, Harare.

"One time there was a lion, that really made me go faster," said Kwari, the first Olympic mountain biker from Zimbabwe and one of three African starters in Saturday's race.

Coach Wayne Davidson (ZIM) confirms the basic conditions 33-year-old Kwari operates in at home. "For training, we just go into the bush. We don't have a purpose-built trail anywhere. It's wide-open, it's virgin. We can go to places where no human foot has ever touched, but we're leaving behind mountain bike tracks."

"We follow game trails, or very often the native people walking through the area will have a path from one village to the next village," he said. "Elephants make paths for themselves, six-foot-wide, perfect for training. You can bump into one, and that's dangerous."
